When the ITS World Congress comes to Birmingham in 2027, it will bring together the people driving intelligent transport forward. Darren Capes is one of them.
As the newly appointed President of the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE), Darren cares deeply about developing the next generation of transport professionals. For him, intelligent transport isn't just about technology. It's about giving people the skills, knowledge and opportunities to shape the future of transport.
It's a belief that lies at the heart of the ITS World Congress.
From 25 to 29 October 2027, Birmingham will welcome the global intelligent transport community for five days of learning, collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Engineers, policymakers, researchers, technology providers and transport operators from around the world will come together to share real-world experiences, tackle common challenges and discover practical solutions.
Darren's role in the Congress reflects that commitment. As Head of Road Infrastructure Technology at the UK Department for Transport (DfT), he is the UK Government's lead official working on the event alongside Transport for West Midlands. He also serves on the ITS World Congress Programme Committees, working closely with ERTICO as preparations for Birmingham 2027 continue.
Whether through technical sessions, live demonstrations, the exhibition or the conversations that continue between sessions, the Congress is designed to bring people together.
As the UK prepares to welcome the world to Birmingham, Darren's commitment to people, skills and collaboration reflects what the Congress is all about. While technology continues to evolve, it's the people behind it who will drive the next generation of intelligent transport.
Be part of the conversations, connections and collaborations that drive intelligent transport forward.
